Get Ready for Planting Day

We are planting in the West Hills Community Garden on Saturday, May 19th beginning at 9 AM. We still need a few things before planting day, so if you have any of these items available, please consider donating.

1. Compost - We have started our compost pile but need more before planting day. If you have access to compost or would consider donating an organic bag of compost, please bring it on May 19th.

We also need help maintaining the compost. We will have a schedule on VolunteerSpot to turn the compost once a week. If you have a few minutes to spare, please consider signing up. Also, don't forget to donate grass clippings and left over food items to our compost pile. We can use any time of natural vegetation, but please don't add animal waste, processed food or drink, or meat. A good thing to add to the pile would be uneaten vegetables, egg shells, coffee grounds, peelings from vegetable preparation, dryer lent, etc. If you would like to donate "trash" we can use for compost, consider placing a bucket under your kitchen sink in which you could add these types of items and bring once a week to put in the compost bin.

2. Manure

3. Hay or Straw

4. Of course, the vegetables. We will have a list posted soon of vegetables needed for the garden, but keep an eye out for good buys you might want to snatch beforehand. It would be a great help if every volunteer brought a couple of transplants.

Thank you so much for your interest and time spent in the garden!

What Is a Community Garden?

Very Simply, it is: Any piece of land gardened by a group of people.

West Hills Neighborhood Association is partnering with St. Peter's Episcopal Church to create a community garden in Amarillo, Texas, in which everyone, regardless of residence or religious affiliation, can participate. We hope people from all parts of Amarillo and all walks of life will come join in the planting, caretaking, harvesting and/or the sharing of the vegetables and herbs.

Wesley Community Center garden will include all the people they serve—children, teens, senior citizens working together with neighbors to provide fresh, organic food for as many as we can
